Exploring Intuition With Children

A solid connection to your intuition can significantly benefit your witchcraft practice by connecting more deeply with your feelings and needs. Some of us naturally have a strong intuition, but others (me included) must put in the extra work to hear that inner voice. Intuition empowers individuals to make sound decisions, solve problems, develop self awareness and trust their instinct. As parents, we play an important role in guiding our children to tap into this ability.

To cultivate intuition, it is important to create a safe and supportive atmosphere where your children can freely express their thoughts and feelings. Teach them to notice their physical sensations (like butterflies in the stomach or a racing heart) and their emotions. Discuss how these sensations and emotions can provide valuable information.

Here are some creative and age-appropriate activities to help children connect with their intuition:

Before You Begin

Introduce mindfulness practices to your children by starting with a sense of calmness, to enable them to access their intuition more easily. Encourage them to find a calm and peaceful place where they can think without distractions. Assist them in quieting their conscious mind through a repetitive activity that requires minimal concentration.

  • Quiet space: meditation, scrying, body scan

  • Movement: yoga, dance, gardening, walking, working out

  • Art: painting, drawing, coloring book, knitting/ crochet

  • Breathe work: dragon breath, blowing bubbles, box breathing

  • Listening: music or podcast, deep listening-paying close attention to specific sounds

Intuitive Activities for Children

Nature Scavenger Hunt

Take children on a nature walk and ask them to use their intuition to understand energies from different found items; a smooth rock, a feather, or a specific flower. Encourage them to rely on their instincts, senses and emotions to make correspondences for those items.

Crystal Exploration

To introduce children to the concept of energy and intuition provide children with a variety of crystals and minerals. Encourage them to hold each one, close their eyes, and describe how the crystal feels to them. This activity can help children become more attuned to the energies around them.

Herb Identification

Show children different herbs and plants commonly found in your kitchen. Ask them to describe what they feel or sense when they touch, smell and taste each one. Encourage them to trust their initial impressions and feelings about each plant. Keep a journal or grimoire of personal correspondences. This activity can help them understand how scents can trigger intuitive responses.

Moon Observation and Journaling

Teach children about the phases of the moon and how it’s connected to intuition in some belief systems. Encourage them to keep a moon journal where they can jot down their feelings, dreams, or experiences during different lunar phases. Discuss with them the symbols, meanings and feelings that have arisen in the dreams. If writing out the dream is too difficult for younger children try using a talk to text option in a notetaking app.

Correspondences

Now I know the main focus here is trusting intuition to create a more personalized practice, but these can provide an extra boost.

Stones (in jewelry or on altar): Amethyst, Lapis Lazuli, Moonstone

Plants(in tea, diffusers, or whole on altar): Chamomile, Clover, Lavender, Rosemary, Ash, Birch, Elm, Willow, Pine, Spruce

Metal(jewelry): Silver

Colors(clothing, altar clothe): Blue, Silver, violet, Yellow

Astrology(moon phases or mondays): Moon, Cancer Sign

Conclusion

These activities can serve as a starting point for children to explore and appreciate their intuitive abilities. Try similar exercises with other topics like animals, planets, shapes, colors, astrological signs, etc. Consider creating a grimoire for your child’s personal correspondences. Continue to explore and practice regularly, developing intuition is a personal journey, and it may take time for children to fully embrace and trust this aspect of themselves. Be patient, and allow them the space to explore and learn from their own experiences. And, of course, Have Fun!
