3 Child-Friendly Methods of Divination

Introducing children to divination can be approached in a casual and open-minded way. It's important to emphasize to children that divination is a tool for introspection and self-discovery, rather than a method of predicting the future. Start by discussing the concept of intuition and how it's normal to have strong feelings or hunches about things. Read more about guiding your children in tapping into their own intuition here.

Here are some of my favorite forms of divination to introduce to young practitioners:

1. Pendulum Divination

An excellent starting point for children, pendulum divination offers a simple yet powerful way to communicate with the unknown. A pendulum can be fashioned from everyday objects such as a pendant, a small toy figurine, or even a key tied to a string. Encourage your child to hold the pendulum and ask yes or no questions. Make a divination board together, let the kids decorate it as they wish, and ask questions about the upcoming year. With practice, they will develop an intuition for interpreting these movements.

2. Card Reading

My favorite cards right now are Lenormand Decks. They are designed to be interpreted as a sentence. This can make the interpretation process feel easier when just starting out. Simplified versions of these decks are readily available, featuring whimsical illustrations and bite-sized meanings. Oracle cards are another great starter option. These usually have key words on the bottom of the cards to help with interpreting so you don’t always have to refer back to the guide book, which can feel time consuming when interpreting with children. Like the Pendulum, cards can be used to ask yes or no questions. Simply draw 3 cards; if 2 or more are upright the answer is yes, if 2 or more are reversed the answer is no.

3. Casting

We often associate casting with runes. While these are a great tool for divination it may be difficult, at first, for children to memorize the meanings. Children can create their own set of runes from small stones or pieces of wood, decorating them with symbols and colors that resonate with their unique spirit. Alternatively, instead of creating runes, use objects or small toys to create a more personalized casting set.

Final Thoughts

Lastly, remember that intuition becomes clearer with time and practice. Sometimes we aren’t totally accurate - and it’s totally okay! When things don't go as planned, embrace the opportunity to learn and grow. As your children grow and learn, their intuition will too. Trust the Journey, be patient and have fun!
