Working with the Moon

The moon has always felt so magical to me. Looking at the moon and stars has been something I have shared with my children from a young age. Something that started as part of a bedtime routine, finding the moon before we get ready for bed, has turned into a longer-lasting tradition than I expected. They feel the magic of the moon without any explanation. Now, every time they see the moon, they are so excited to share that moment with me or each other, talk about how it looks, or ask me questions about it. This is just one small way to take a step into incorporating the moon into a family practice. I want to share some moon practices with my kids that are quick and easy to follow but can be built upon as your family practice evolves.

The New Moon

This is when the moon is completely dark. It is a time of renewal, new beginnings, and optimism. This phase lasts about 3 days. Set intentions or goals for the family, individually or both, that can be accomplished during the month.

  • Cleanse your home or family altar.

  • Write or draw intentions and display where they can be seen daily.

  • Draw a card from an oracle/tarot deck. We use the Gentle Creatures Oracle Deck.

The Waxing Moon

The moon is gradually becoming brighter as it moves toward the time of the full moon. There are three waxing phases, the waxing crescent, the first quarter, and the waxing gibbous, lasting about 2 weeks. This phase is all about taking action. For example, your intention is to complete a painting this month. In that case, schedule an uninterrupted time during the week to commit to working on it. Or the kids are trying to use their manners more. In that case, they may need a daily mantra/affirmation like “I use kind words.” I have their intention statement in a very prominent place so it can be seen throughout the day.

Full Moon

When the moon is fully illuminated is a time to reflect on your progress toward your goal and celebrate your successes, big or small. This phase also lasts about 3 days.

  • Write down all of your wins.

  • Share your progress with others.

  • Give positive feedback to each other.

Waning Moon

During the final two weeks of the month, the moon becomes darker as it moves through the waning gibbous, the third quarter, and crescent phases. This is when you want to release what is no longer serving you or any negative energy that arose during the month. This process can be as simple as writing what you want to release on paper, ripping it up, and blowing it in the wind away from home.

Let me know how you like to celebrate the moon phases with your family!
