A Pumpkin Spell for Releasing

This year, I wanted to take a step toward introducing shadow work and ways we can address negative feelings, thoughts or habits. I’ve put together a releasing spell that is family friendly and easily adjustable to your childs age. I did not add a casting or closing of a circle but it can be easily added in, if that is part of your practice.

A Pumpkin Spell for Releasing

Materials Needed:
1. A small hollowed pumpkin or gourd
2. A variety of colorful autumn leaves
3. A pen or marker
4. Protection or banishing herbs(optional)

Instructions:
1. In a quiet space outside, sit in a small circle with your children with the small pumpkin or gourd in the middle surrounded by the leaves. Begin by taking a few deep breaths, to become grounded and centered.

2. Draw symbols that represent banishment, or protection on the outside of the pumpkin.

3. Now, pick up the colorful autumn leaves and write down something you would like to let go of like a fear, a bad habit, or a negative thought pattern. Take turns holding one of your own leaves and say “I release (fear/habit), it does not serve me.” Then place the leaf into the pumpkin.

4. Once everyone is done, you can add in protection or banishing herbs and then place the top back onto the pumpkin.

5. Take your pumpkin to a spot in your yard where it will be undisturbed, bury it in the ground or cover with some soil and leaves.

6. When you are ready to complete the spell, whisper a few heartfelt words of gratitude for the blessings in your life and the magick of Samhain.

I hope you enjoy this fun little ritual, feel free to add to or remove any elements that don’t resonate with your family. Let me know if you tried this ritual with your family and how it went!

How are you celebrating Samhain this year?
